Marsh's Library, Dublin 8
The library is one of the last 18th century buildings in Ireland still used for its original purpose.
The Library holds exhibitions, and occasional conferences, and has published a range of material, primarily related to exhibitions and the catalogue.
Marsh's Library, situated in St. Patrick's Close, adjacent to St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland is the oldest public library in Ireland, and was designed by Sir William Robinson.
It was built to the order of Archbishop Narcissus Marsh in 1701 and has a collection of over 25,000 books and 300 manuscripts.
The Library contains some 25,000 printed books relating to the 16th, 17th and the early part of the 18th centuries.
Subjects include theology, medicine, law, science, travel, navigation, music, surveying, ancient history and classical literature. In addition there are about 300 manuscripts in the collection.
The interior of the Library remains unchanged since it was built 300 years ago and it is a magnificent example of a 17th century scholar's library.
