Oscar Wilde Statue, Dublin 2
Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (16 October 1854 - 30 November
1900) was an Irish writer and poet. After writing in different forms
throughout the 1880s, he became one of London's most popular playwrights
in the early 1890s. Today he is remembered for his epigrams, plays and
the tragedy of his imprisonment, followed by his early death.
This is the memorial to Oscar Wilde.
A relaxed Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde, who was born in nearby
Westland Row in 1854, is shown reclining on a huge 35-ton quartz rock.
Wilde, who spent much of his adult life in England, is regarded as one
of Ireland's greatest literary figures. Until the late 1890s, owing to a
gay affair which led to a prison sentence and disgrace, he was the
darling of the upper classes, entertaining them with his wit and
conversation
